Dahabshiil Group and Somtel have announced a $200,000 donation to support communities affected by the ongoing drought in the Awdal region, one of the hardest-hit areas in the Horn of Africa.
The funds will be used to provide emergency assistance, including food, water, and other essential supplies, as part of a broader humanitarian response to the worsening situation.
Dahabshiil Group CEO Abdirashid Duale said the private sector has a critical role to play in supporting communities during times of crisis.
“We are deeply concerned about the suffering of our people,” said Abdirashid Duale. “It is our responsibility to act swiftly in times of hardship. This donation reflects our long-standing commitment to supporting the communities we serve.”
The two companies are among the first private sector entities to respond directly to the drought emergency appeal.
Local authorities and aid agencies have warned that Awdal is experiencing severe drought conditions, with dried-up grazing land, depleted water wells, and widespread livestock deaths. Many families have been displaced in search of food and water.
Dahabshiil, which operates in over 140 countries, is widely known for providing remittance and banking services across the region and globally. Its telecommunications arm, Somtel, offers mobile, internet, and digital money transfer services, helping to promote connectivity and financial inclusion in underserved areas.
Both companies have previously supported healthcare, education, and emergency relief initiatives in the region and beyond. They have called on other businesses and members of the diaspora to join the ongoing efforts to support those affected by the drought.
This donation comes at a time when the government has declared a state of emergency and launched a national appeal involving public institutions, civil society, and the private sector.
Humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned that the Horn of Africa is facing one of its worst droughts in decades, driven by consecutive failed rainy seasons and the intensifying impact of climate change.
